Henderson house fire

It started out as a beautiful day. I was driving home when I saw the big smoke. Two minutes later the smoke was really dark. I saw a couple of fires destroy in minutes in the last 2 years.
This house was equal to earth in about 20 minutes. When you wake up you have a beautiful house, and in 2 hrs all is gone...
The cause: a bike blow up in the basement
When I got to the place this is how the house looked like:

WPPI 2009 Awards of Excellence 16x20 Print Competition Winner of 2 Awards!!!

Last year I decided that I want to enter the really well respected WPPI print competition.

So this year was my first year I put images in WPPI's Award of Excellence 16 * 20 Print Competition. 2 of my images score as consistently high, over 80 points and it was hanging on the Exhibition wall during the WPPI between images of internationally renowned wedding photographers, such as Yervant, Jerry Ghionis, Jim Garner, Bambi Cantrell, to name just a few.

When I entered to the Exhibition room, I saw my first image what was entered at the Bride alone category. When I stepped to the other room and saw my other image of my wild horses, what was entered in Animals / Pets category I was thrilled. I couldn’t believe I won awards in 2 categories! I receive An Accolade of Excellence in both categories

WPPI 2009 in Vegas!!!

WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International) annual Convention & Trade Show in Las Vegas just finished. This was my third year in a raw to attend. This year it took place at the MGM hotel. This is the photo industry’s biggest and best trade show and educational convention in the United States for editorial, commercial, nature, portrait & wedding photographers. The convention attracts over12,000 wedding and portrait photographers from more than 30 countries worldwide.

I love to go to the tradeshow and the seminars to learn from world's best photographers. My goal is to learn and be better at what I do from time to time.
I also spent time with a couple of members of our local chicks who click club (talented group of female photographers). I also had a chance to meet and talk to a couple of other talented photographers, and listen to well-known photographer speakers from all around the country, who inspired me.

I walked away with new and exciting ideas. Stayed tuned for the new things coming up!

Bambi Cantrell is a great photographer with this feminine touch to posing and capturing the details of the wedding day. On her Platform seminar:

Joe Photo has a real heart. It was great to listen to his seminar about relasionship in life. He put tears to the eyes of the attendies.

Crazy rain in Las Vegas

When my mom visited me she doesn’t understand why we have flood tunnels all over the Las Vegas Valley. Las Vegas is a city is in the desert. They are empty or almost empty all year around, but suddenly they fill up really fast. Here is the story behind the water. I dedicate this post for my mom.

Today it was raining when I woke up, drove in heavy rain to work. By the airport I was driving in big water which was running down the street. The Las Vegas Valley was under cloudy skies almost all day long.

Flash flood season runs from July through September, and there we go here is the flashflood just 6 weeks after the heavy snowstorm in Las Vegas’ and it is February now.

The Las Vegas Valley gets minimal rainfall, but when it occurs it comes sudden. The rain runs down fast from the surrounding mountains because the city lies in a lower elevation. So the Valley drains down the mountains toward the Colorado River System.
The other problem is that the eroded sediments disperse from the mountains that surround the Las Vegas valley in the form of alluvial fans. The alluvial fans around the valley are coated with Caliche, which is a sedimentary rock, a hardened deposit of calcium carbonate. The Caliche is almost impervious, so when there is rainfall in the valley, almost 100% of it is runoff.

The Strip a little bit after 3pm

So the city built a network of flash flood tunnels that stretch throughout the city. The Flamingo Wash comes from Red Rock Canyon (where we just hiked a couple of days ago) under Caesars palace and reappears in and behind the IP parking garage before it gets in the tunnel again to continue its journey towards Lake Las Vegas and Lake Mead which is part of the Colorado River system.

The flood behind the Imperial Palace:

Just an hour and half later. Like nothing happened. The sky is beautifully blue, the Strip almost dry...
